4 Reasons to Delight in the Law of the Lord

To answer our questions above we also need to see the truth that God commands us to delight in him. Note: Those last two texts show something crucial. Therefore, in answer to our first question my answer is: At root, what God delights in about us is that we delight in him. One way to get at this is to say the obvious: God approves of what is right.

He rejoices in our thinking and feeling and doing what is right. So we should ask, What is right—ultimately? Rightness is thinking, feeling, and doing what flows from a true perception of the supreme value of God. It is seeing truly, savoring duly, and showing consistently in action the infinite worth of God. Therefore, when we say God rejoices in our thinking and feeling and doing what is right, we mean that he delights in our seeing, savoring, and showing his own supreme value. God values our valuing him. God delights in our delighting in him.

Now the second question we asked above is: Why does he tell us this? Should we be glad to hear it? Yes, we should be glad to hear it. But why?

Bible Living

What is the bottom of our joy in hearing it? It is possible to hear it, and be glad to hear it, in a way that is devastating. The proper reason to be glad that God delights in our delight in him is because it confirms that our delight is truly in God.

This fixes our gaze more steadfastly on him and deepens our joy in his beauty. What if we hear his praise as a tickler of what we really enjoy, namely, being made much of? If a man would be godly, he must first know what God is like. For this reason alone, we should expect Proverbs to contain a description of the character of God.

  8. There is yet another reason why Proverbs has much to contribute to our understanding of the character of God. Proverbs is an intensely practical book. It does not deal with ethereal, philosophical truth, but with practical truth, truth which can be converted into godly attitudes and actions. When Proverbs informs us about God, it reveals those divine characteristics which should shape our lives. For the crooked man is an abomination to the Lord; But He is intimate with the upright.

The curse of the Lord is on the house of the wicked, But He blesses the dwelling of the righteous The way of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord, But He loves him who pursues righteousness A good man will obtain favor from the Lord, But He will condemn a man who devises evil ; cf.

I find a number of striking similarities of thought between these descriptions of what God delights in and what He despises and the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew There are at least two very practical applications of what we have just observed in Proverbs concerning what God loves and what He hates.

The first and one we shall deal with in greater detail later is that we can gain insight into the subject of divine guidance or the will of God. From the observations we have made above, it should be obvious that God is righteous, good, holy, truthful and just. He loves righteousness and He hates evil. We have already learned from Proverbs that God is good; Proverbs also describes a God who is great. He is great in what He knows, and He is great in power. Theologians speak of God as being omniscient, which simply means that He knows everything. For the ways of a man are before the eyes of the Lord, And He watches all his paths Sheol and Abaddon lie open before the Lord, How much more the hearts of men!

All the ways of a man are clean in his own sight, But the Lord weighs the motives ; cf. God is also omnipotent. He is all-powerful. Nothing is beyond His control. God is able to accomplish what He determines to do.

No one is able to thwart His will. Kings, the most powerful figures in the ancient world, were subject to His will. The Lord has made everything for its own purpose, Even the wicked for the day of evil By His will, battles are won, and even those things which appear to be matters of chance are under His control. The horse is prepared for the day of battle, But victory belongs to the Lord The plans of the heart belong to man, But the answer of the tongue is from the Lord God is in charge of His creation, and He will not ever lose control of it.

While man must choose to forsake his folly and follow the path of wisdom, no earthly or heavenly creature has the power to resist the will of God. Man would never come to know or understand God unless God first sought out men, to reveal Himself to them and to initiate a relationship with them. Surely I am more stupid than any man, And I do not have the understanding of a man. Who has ascended into heaven and descended? Who has gathered the wind in His fists? Who has wrapped the waters in His garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth?

Surely you know! God has chosen to be intimately involved in the affairs of men. He is not distant and aloof. A just balance and scales belong to the Lord; All the weights of the bag are His concern The Lord will not allow the righteous to hunger, But He will thrust aside the craving of the wicked He will not allow evil and injustice to go unpunished, nor kindness to go unrewarded.

He who mocks the poor reproaches his Maker; He who rejoices at calamity will not go unpunished He who is gracious to the poor man lends to the Lord, And He will repay him for his good deed One of the practical outworkings of the character of God is that He is the Judge of the earth, and of mankind in particular. One thing of which we may be certain is that there is a day of reckoning coming, when God will judge men and reward them according to their deeds. Riches do not profit in the day of wrath, But righteousness delivers from death And does He not know it who keeps your soul?

And will He not render to man according to his work? While we are told that even the wicked fulfill a divine purpose , the judgment that evil men receive is precisely what they deserve. He who is steadfast in righteousness will attain to life, And he who pursues evil will bring about his own death But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law does he meditate day and night. Psalm I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.

Blessed is the man that feareth the LORD, that delighteth greatly in his commandments. Psalm ,35,47,48,72,92 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee….
